Faro Belgian Beer

Faro Beer is a sweet tasting beer that is made from a blend of lambic and a much lighter freshly brewed beer to which brown sugar (or caramel or molasses) is added. In some instances, sweet herbs are also added to make it sweeter. This beer originated in the 19th century and has been a favorite to many mainly due to it’s sweet taste.

The use of lighter beer in it’s fermentation makes it a cheap light beer for everyday use. It is actually regarded as one of the most highly used beers in the country. In earlier days, the sugar was originally added before serving and therefore, it did not add carbonation or alcohol to the beer as the sugar did not have time to ferment. Faro beer of the modern day is still characterized by the use of brown sugar and lambic but it is not necessarily a light beer. In earlier days, Faro beer brewers used to use Meertsbier which is not the case today. They also didn’t bottle the beer thus making it look cheap. Modern Faro beer is bottled, sweetened and pasteurized to prevent re-fermentation in the bottle.

Some of the most famous Faro beers are made by Cantillon, Lindermans, Mort Subite and Boon breweries. These are breweries highly recognized because of the quality of their beers. It is why this beer remains a favorite to many Belgian drinkers even while the country has a wide variety of beer types. Being made from 100% natural ingredients, Faro beer has many vitamins and minerals which is another reason some drinkers prefer this beer.  If you’re going to drink, might as well make it as healthy as you can, right?!? :)   In the 19th century, a French poet described it as a ‘beer that you drink twice’. What drove him to say isn’t clearly known, but it’s widely thought that because of it’s sweet taste, you’ll surely want to grab another.
